BANGALORE: The Consular officers of the US Consulate office, Chennai, held a panel discussion on student visa on the MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology (MSRIT) Campus on Friday.The panelists outlined the procedure of applying for a student visa.The officers stated that the procedure of application has been improved and simplified to a large extent that now an applicant has to spend less than an hour in the Consulate office for the interview.Further they informed that the desiring applicants can avail an appointment at the Consulate within two working days.The Consulars stressed on the need to be transparent and to be truthful at every stage.“It is important to give accurate information and students and parents have to be cautious of any fraudulent measures,” said Anand Krishna, information officer at US Consulate.“They should consult the US consulate and must never listen to stray advises of any outsiders,” he added.Some of the students felt the session was informative.“At first, I did not know anything about visa but now I have got some idea and I think that after some more research, I can apply without any hesitation,” said Apoorva, a medical student.Another student from HKBK College, Vinay said that he wished that the session had lasted for a longer duration.His father, Prakash said, “I hope they organise more of such sessions for better awareness.” According to Consulate office, ten percent of all US non immigrant visa applications come from India and it has issued 1,42,565 non immigrant visas in 2010.At present, 1,03,000 Indian student’s are studying in US universities.
