New Delhi: Even as Myanmar prepares for the arrival of UN envoy Ibrahim Gambari on Saturday, its military regime has ordered the expulsion of UN's top diplomat in the country.
UN resident coordinator Charles Petrie has been expelled for being critical of the government's handling of the protests by monks last month.
UN Secretary General Ban ki Moon says he is disappointed by the decision.
It is not clear how this will impact upon Gambari's six-day visit who is expected to meet General Aung Chee, the regime's pointman who will also liaison with pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Ahead of the envoy's visit the military junta had released 46 people had been released as a goodwill gesture that had earlier been detained during September's pro-democracy protests
The United States has also condemned Myanmar's of Petrie.
"This outrageous action. It is an insult to the United Nations and the international community," said Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for the National Security Council.
