US has earmarked $ 300 mn for Pak to aid it in its war against terror, but Pak President Gen Musharraf is unhappy.

New Delhi: US says it has earmarked $ 300 million for Pakistan to aid the Asian country in its war against terrorism, but Pakistan President General Musharraf is unhappy.

Apparently, a proposed US legislation states US military assistance to Pakistan will be stopped if the country fails to halt the resurgence of Taliban inside its territory.

"I am opposed to the new legislation. I have personally talked about the bill. We will see if the bill is passed or not. I agree that the bill is contrary to what we have done. It goes against that," news agency PTI quoted Musharraf as telling a private television channel.

He added that, "They (the US) should be thankful to us and not impose restrictions when we are doing a lot. I am opposed to the bill."

The Bill has been endorsed by the US House of Representatives and is being debated in the Senate, before it is passed and made into a law.

President Musharraf has defended his country saying that Pakistan has defeated al-Qaeda cadres hiding in Pakistani mountains and that the same have been expelled from cities like Lahore, Karachi and Faisalabad.

The White House is seeking $ 294.8 billion to fund global counter-terrorism operations, including $ 99.6 billion for fiscal year 2007, $ 145.2 billion in 2008 and $ 50 billion in 2009.

The majority of the funding has been allocated to the Pentagon but more than $ 9 billions has been sought from the State Department budget.

If the $ 4.5 billion for the programme is approved it will have $ 2.4 billion to Israel, $ 1.3 billion to Egypt, $ 300 million to Pakistan, $ 200 million to Jordan and $ 15.7 million to Indonesia.
