UP govt calls Big B's address fraud
Actor's claim that he is a resident of 17, Clive Road, Allahabad is not true, government lawyer tells High Court.

New Delhi/ Lucknow: The UP government on Thursday alleged that actor Amitabh Bachchan committed fraud by giving a “wrong address” in his application for farmland allotment in Barabanki district’s Daulatpur village.

UP government lawyer D K Upadhya alleged Bachchan had committed “another fraud” by claiming that he was a resident of 17, Clive Road, Allahabad.

Upadhya alleged before the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court the actor's father, poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan, lived at 17, Clive Road till 1958 after which the house was sold.

The lawyer made these allegations while opposing Bachchan’s petition which challenges another court’s cancellation of the farmland he was allotted in Daulatpur.

Bachchan claims to be a resident of 17, Clive Road in Daulatpur’s revenue records of 1983 and in the court petition. "This goes to show that Bachchan had committed another fraud by showing a wrong address," he alleged.

Bachchan's lawyer Mukul Rohtagi said the Faizabad court did not hear his client and exceeded its jurisdiction by going into the merits of the case.

Bachchan was not even given an opportunity of being heard before the matter was decided which was a "gross violation of the principles of natural justice."

Upadhya requested the court to reject Bachchan’s petition and said the Faizabad court was empowered to cancel the allotment.

Justice D P Singh reserved his order on the maintainability of the petition after hearing lengthy arguments made by Upadhya and

Bachchan, who is in Yorkshire, UK, said he would obey any decision the courts gave in the farmland allotment controversy. "A lot of people have asked me about this, but all I want to say is that I have full faith in the judiciary of the country and I will abide by any decision that they take. Further than that any thing that I say on this matter, will not be appropriate as the matter is sub judice," Bachchan told PTI.
