Kanpur: 'Nirbhik', a light-weight revolver designed in the backdrop of the Delhi gangrape, has witnessed a lukewarm reponse from women, with only 22 revolvers being sold to the fairer sex out of the 340 pieces sold last year.

Field Gun Factory which had launched the revolver in Kanpur on March 25, 2014, had generated a lot of buzz on its launch but out of the 375 revolvers made, 35 pieces remain unsold. A number of women had also inquired about the revolver in the first few days but the interest waned after a while.

A reason for the lukewarm response from women could be that it is not so easy for them to get a license, Field Gun Factory General Manager Rakesh Kumar said.

The Home ministry has recently given an order of 100 revolvers for Jammu and Kashmir police but it is not clear yet these will be provided to men or women, Kumar said.

On being asked whether the factory would decrease the production of the revolver due to the tepid response, Kumar said, "No, this year we are 1000 such pieces would be produced".

The revolver was launched in the memory of Delhi-rape victim 'Nirbhaya'. The .32 bore revolver weighs only 500 gram, two-third of others, and is easy to keep in handbags. It is capable of firing six rounds and costs Rs. 1.40 lakh.
