Etawah/Lucknow: Two cops who mercilessly beat up a six-year-old Dalit girl, sparking a public outcry, surrendered before a local court which granted bail to one and remanded another to 14 days in judicial custody even as the case of theft slapped against the child was found to be false.

Inspector Chandra Bhan Singh and sub-inspector Shyamlal Yadav surrendered before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (First) Jamshed Ali, who granted bail to Singh and sent Yadav to 14-days' judicial custody.

The two, along with four other cops, were booked under various sections of IPC and SC/ST (atrocities prevention) act for beating up the girl, Komal, two days back for allegedly stealing Rs 280 from a woman's wallet.

The girl named Komal was thrashed by the policemen after one Anju Katharia took her to Jaswantpur Police Station, alleging that the child had stolen Rs 280 from her wallet at a market near Lohamandi in Jaswantpur area.

Senior sub-inspector Shyamlal Yadav pulled the girl up in the air by clutching her hair, threatened and scolded her and asked her to admit that she had stolen the money as six other policemen, including SHO Chandrabhan Singh, remained mute spectators.

Meanwhile, ADG law and order Brij Lal in Lucknow said that the case on the basis of which the girl was brutally thrashed by Etawah police on Monday has been found to be false and a case would now be filed against the complainant.
