NAYAGARH: Students’ Union election at Nayagarh Autonomous College, scheduled on September 29, was cancelled after the college was closed sine die following violence on the campus on Thursday. Tension gripped the campus as a woman candidate was barred from filing nomination papers. Sources said, nominations were to be filed by 12 noon on Thursday. The candidate, who was present before the closing time was barred from filing the nomination as she did not possess relevant documents. Though she returned with the requisite documents 10 minutes past noon, she was not allowed to file her papers. Enraged, her supporters went berserk, damaging college property. Police was called in and after an emergency meeting with the staff council, the principal declared closure of the college and cancellation of the election. Irate students then blocked the Nayagarh-Bhanjanagar road in front of the college, burnt tyres and marched to the collectorate. They submitted a memorandum to the Sub-Collector demanding that the college be reopened and elections held as per schedule.DHENKANAL: At Dhenkanal (Autonomous) Science College here, Plus-III student Diptiman Mahapatra was declared president uncontested. Similarly, Satyajit Nayak was elected vice-president, Subhas Chandra Sahoo the dramatic society secretary and Dipak Kumar Barik as athletic secretary. S Patnaik was elected the cultural secretary.BERHAMPUR: At Hinjili Science College here, Goutam Kumar Gouda was elected president uncontested. Similarly, Sumant Kumar Dash was declared vice-president, Niraj Kumar Behera secretary, Mukesh Chandra Pradhan the athletic secretary, Amiya Kumar Hota the dramatics secretary and Chiman Kumar Sahu secretary of Oriya Sahitya Samaj. Similarly, for the junior college, Dharmendra Sahu was elected secretary of cultural association, Nilachal Sahu secretary of commerce association and Siba Sankar Pradhan secretary of the science society.
