To avoid precipitating the Nelliampathy issue further, the UDF high power committee’s decision to keep a lid on the issue on Monday was based on the conviction that only a judicial review would save the Front from political embarrassment.
That the issue had caused heartburn for most of the leaders was reflected in the words of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy at the outset of the meet. ‘’The UDF image has suffered due to the Nelliampathy issue,’’ Chandy lamented.
Amid differing voices in the political combine and an air of suspicion looming large among the public,
the meet dealt the Nelliampathy issue threadbare. Kerala Congress supremo K M Mani took strong exception against attempts to picturise all farmers as encroachers.
‘’Plantations are also part of the forest cover. The EFL laws clearly states that tracts which are cultivated or with dwellings should be exempted. Farmers are entitled for protection,’’he said.
KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala said that there was no need for constituting an UDF sub-committee on Nelliampathy.
‘’ This is totally a legal issue,’’ he felt. On the visit of Congress MLAs to Nelliampathy, he said: ‘’They had discussed their plans for a visit. But I had not given permission,’’ he claimed.
CMP leader K R Aravindakshan pointed out that MLAs V D Satheesan and T N Pratapan alone are not champions of ‘Green politics’. ‘’Why are the two keeping quiet on the filling up of around ten acres of backwaters near the Bolgatty Palace in Kochi?’’ he asked.
Labour Minister Shibu Baby John maintained that chief whip P C George was interfering in all issues and inviting trouble for the UDF. ‘’He should be controlled,’’ he told K M Mani.Interestingly, Water Resources Minister P J Joseph was also supportive to him. ‘’George should not have have countered T N Pratapan,’’ Joseph said.
Kerala Congress (Jacob) chairman Johny Nellore continued his critical posture against the parallel visit and evidence collection of the Congress MLAs.
Industries Minister P K Kunhalikutty opined that it was time for the UDF to find out the root causes of controversies generated one after the other. SJD chief M P Veerendrakumar was of the view that with the resignation of M M Hassan from the convenorship post, the relevance of the UDF panel had been lost.
