BANGALORE: With more and more youth enrolling into coaching camps to master different sports, they are getting closer to the risk zone of frequent injuries. Addressing the media after inaugurating the Sparsh Sports Injuries Centre here on Friday, Dr Sharan S Patil, chairman and chief of orthopedic services, Sparsh Hospital said that as an emerging sporting nation, we need to understand the importance of treating the sports injuries. Nearly 70 per cent of the sports persons suffer shoulder injuries and due to the dearth of the specialised centre, many seek treatment from abroad.“We need to train our players an improve their fitness level and teach them to deal with tissue injuries. We also want sports injuries to be covered under the insurance,” he opined.Prof W A Wallace, professor of orthopaedic, Nottingham University, who has treated cricketer Virendra Sehwag for a shoulder injury in 2009, said that India has skilled surgeons but lacks the adequate facilities to deal with sports injuries.Besides, Sparsh Hospital has also sent letters to the Sports Academy in the city to join hands with them in sharing knowledge about basic mechanisms of various sporting injuries and the preventive strategies that can help sport persons and their trainers in prevention of injuries.With an aim to bring together the experienced sports injury specialists from Indian and abroad, a two-day Bangalore shoulder course is being organised by the Sparsh Hospital.The course offers techniques in the management of sports injuries.
