CHENNAI: The Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) and Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre (DMDSC) honoured two distinguished physicians for their exemplary contribution to the field of medicine, on Saturday.As part of the event, the scientific committee of the MDRF conferred the 3rd MDRF Gold Medal Oration award to Dr KK Talwar, Chairman, board of governors, Medical Council of India and former director, PGIMER, Chandigarh for his outstanding contribution to the field of cardiology.The award was presented to him by Padma Laureate, Dr Mayil Vahanan Natarajan, Vice Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR medical University.Dr KK Talwar, who was the third recipient of the award that was instituted in 2004, was honoured for his contributions in the field of cardiology, including diagnostic and interventional practices and introducing new procedures such as endomyocardial biopsy, implantation of biventricular pacemaker in heart failure patients and the technique of electromagnetic mapping of complex arrhythmia.The 18th Dr Mohan’s DSC Gold medal oration award was conferred to Dr KM Venkat Narayan, Hubert professor of Global Health and professor of Medicine Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University, Atlanta. He received the award from Dr Shashank Joshi, Endocrine and Metabolic physician, Lilavati hospital and Vice president of RSSDI, Mumbai and President of All India Association of Advance Research in Obesity.Addressing the press conference, Dr Mohan said, “The DMDSC scientific committee had selected Dr Narayanan for his outstanding contribution to the field of diabetes and for his innovative research that focuses in epidemiology of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and prevention of diabetes, as well as health care delivery.” Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Education Academy (DMDEA) also inaugurated courses offered with affiliation to the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR medical University. Dr KK Talwar inaugurated the courses. The courses included a Post Doctoral fellowship in Diabetology for those with MD degree (one year), PG diploma in diabetes education for those with BSc Food science, Nutrition and Dietetics or BSc Nursing or BSc Pharmacy(one year), BSc in Medical Laboratory Technology for those who have passed class 12 (3 years), Diploma in Podiatry and diploma in Nursing Aide for class 12 pass-outs (2 years).Speaking at the occasion, Dr Ranjit Unnikrishnan, Vice Chairman and Diabetologist, DMDSC and dean of DMDEA underlined the significance of the courses in creating a new cadre of diabetes related paramedical specialists to screen and prevent complications associated with diabetes.In his presidential address, Dr Mayil Vahanan Natarajan noted that there was a marked shift in the age of onset of diabetes, with the younger generation being vulnerable to the disease. He also stressed the need for more studies and national symposiums on prevention of diabetes.
