Trinamool MLA surrenders in court
Trinamool Congress MLA Arabul Islam, an accused in a clash between a civilians and police, surrendered in a court.

New Delhi: The accused in last month's conflict between a group of people and the police in Bhangor in West Bengal surrendered in court on Monday.

Trinamool Congress MLA Arabul Islam’s plea for anticipatory was rejected by the Supreme Court.

Islam, who had moved the Calcutta High Court and then the Supreme Court seeking an anticipatory bail, surrendered in the court of Baruipur SDJM Shantanu Jha.

He has been remanded to judicial custody till March 5.

Islam, a police officer and eight others were injured in the clash between the police and members of Jomi Bachao Committee (Save Farmland Comittee) at Bohirampur mouza in Bhangor area of South 24 Parganas district on December 18.

The Trinamool backed Jomi Bahchao Committee is protesting against acquisition of farmland for the Tata Motors at Singur, had gathered near the Kolkata-Basanti highway on that fateful day,

They had tried to uproot some posts set up by the state government to mark off the land for the four-lane Raichak-Barasat highway to be constructed by the Salim Group of Indonesia.

When policemen guarding the area tried to stop the Committee members, who were led by local MLA Arabul Islam, the clash occurred.

Of the 42 people accused in the case, 39 have already secured bail.
