TIRUMALA: Nine treasure hunters, including an employee of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), were arrested on the Tirumala Hills on Wednesday after they were found to be excavating at the Itakayala mandapam near the Venugopalaswamy temple en route to Papavinasanam in the hope of unearthing a treasure trove.According to vigilance officials, Venkata Reddy, a Vahanam bearer of the TTD, along with Gandhi, a taxi driver, engaged seven others to dig up the place where he believed an ancient treasure was hidden. Acting on a tip-off, the officials took all of them into custody. By the time they arrived at the mandapam, the accused had dug up three trenches. They were later handed over to the Tirumala police. Taking a serious view of the incident, police are probing whether any such exercise is underway elsewhere on the Hills. TTD officials said they would conduct a departmental inquiry into the role of Venkata Reddy and place him under suspension if found guilty.
