New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs has said that the two Indian traders who were allegedly held hostage in Yiwu in China are now safe in Shanghai and will return only after the legal procedure is complete.
The MEA said, "The traders are in Shanghai. We are in touch with them, we cannot disclose their location. They are safe and all possible assistance is being provided to them. We are monitoring it closely."
"They are involved in a commercial litigation, once this is resolved they will come back, the litigation has to run its course," the ministry said.
The two Indian nationals were on Wednesday released and shifted to a hotel in Shanghai by Indian officials.
"We reached safely to Shanghai and were put up in a hotel by the Indian Consulate," Deepak Raheja, who was held captive along with Shyamsunder Agrawal, said over the phone.
He said when they were being taken out there was no resistance by local traders who had surrounded their hotel at Yiwu where they were put up during the past two days.
Meanwhile, China on Wednesday assured India that it has initiated criminal proceedings against the five locals suspected for the torture of the two Indians and promised to address the issue besides giving due attention to the safety of Indian nationals on its soil.
