VELLORE: The Thanthai Periyar Government Institute of Technology (TPGIT) is all set to get autonomy, according to principal of the institute, Dr M Arularasu, who assumed office last week. Arularasu said the institute had already applied for the status upgradation and an inspection team from the parent Anna University is expected to formalise the same. The autonomous status would give the institute freedom to device its own courses, frame syllabi and introduce new courses suited for the region, he pointed.The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the National Board of Accreditation are expected to visit the institute soon to accord the necessary accreditations to improve the courses. Recently, Arularasu was appointed as the zonal coordinator for the Anna University’s Vellore zone, which comprised 34 self-financed engineering colleges in Vellore, Tiruvannamalai and Kancheepuram districts.Araulasu also said that steps were being taken to establish a regional research centre to promote research-based activities to enroll and monitor research studies by students and faculty leading to the award of PhD degrees, which will benefit around 2,000 students in the zone. The institute also has been selected to continue with the phase II activities under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) funded by the World Bank.In the first phase, the institute received `10 crore grant which was utilised for development of infrastructure, establishment of a digital library and video conferencing facilities, besides conducting around 80 programmes for community development under the aegis of Service to Community and Economy and Tribal Development Programme to benefit youngsters from the rural and unorganised sectors. Each of these programmes had provided skill development training to a group of 30 candidates to start small-scale business ventures.
