CHENNAI: The four-member committee constituted by the State government to study the safety aspects of the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) and fears of the locals about the plant will submit its report on Tuesday to Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa at the Secretariat.The CM announced in the Assembly on February 4 that the State would form its committee and on February 9, a four-member panel comprising former Atomic Energy Commission chief M R Srinivasan, Prof D Arivoli, Prof S Iniyan from Anna University’s Physics department and Energy studies institute respectively and retired IAS officer L N Vijayaraghavan was formed.The committee held its first meeting on February 17 and held discussions with the CM.  The next two days the panel visited the KKNPP and met the representatives of the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy, including its convenor S P Udayakumar.After visiting KKNPP, convenor of the committeer Prof Iniyan told mediapersons that the plant was completely safe. He said that the team reviewed various safety measures at the plant and found that all safety aspects were in place. Stating that the infrastructure of the plant was robust and was at an elevation of 25-feet from the mean sea level, he said the plant would be safe even if a tsunami struck and was designed to withstand quakes of up to 6.5 on the Richter scale. The sensitive reactor would switch off automatically even if there was a slight tremor, he added.
