CHENNAI: The Chief Engineer of the TN Electricity Board in Coimbatore district was chided by the Madras High Court for retrenching the services of a woman, who was given appointment on compassionate grounds.‘Compassionate appointment’ was taken away without ‘compassion’ by the officials. The job was feeding the family of a young widow, who lost her husband when she was hardly 24 years old with two minor chidren to support. It is very unfortunate that the petitioner has to knock the doors of this High Court for her livelihood. The petitioner should not have been driven to the court by the officials, who exhibited neither compassion nor care for the family of the employee who died in harness,’’ Justice N Kirubakaran observed. The judge was allowing a writ petition from K Uthayalakshmi challenging the orders dated August 20 last year of the chief engineer, terminating her services on the ground that she had submitted bogus educational certificate, following an anonymous complaint. After satisfying himself with the genuineness of Uthayalakshmi’s qualification certificate, the judge further observed that the approach of the officials had to be condemned and deprecated. The post she obtained was that of a helper and not any higher post. The judge set aside the dismissal order and directed the CE to reinstate her within six weeks .
