KOCHI: The hoardings and posters nailed on trees on the road sides is a common sight in the city but hardly anyone gives a second thought to the cruelty shown to these silent creatures. Unfortunately, strict laws in this regard are yet to be made in our country. Still the Greens have raised concern over the practice of nailing hoardings on many shade-giving trees on the road sides in the city. They said that laws must come into force to prevent such cruel acts.“The people in the city must act against such cruelty that kills many a shade tree. Since there is no law against such cruelty, the administration turns a blind eye to it. The issue must be dealt with seriously and moves to conserve these trees must be made,” environmentalist, C R Neelakandan said.“We raised our voice against this practice many times but no action has been taken so far. The practice is also a nuisance to the traffic and the traffic department has done nothing to remove such hoardings in the past. The social forestation department has not taken any action against unnecessary cutting of trees and branches in the city. The Mayor and administrators are busy inaugurating programmes, they have no time for other activities,” C M Joy another environmentalist alleged.Veteran environmentalist S Sitaram said that he along with his friends had complained to the Corporation regarding this but nothing has been done so far. “We, nature lovers voluntarily remove the hoardings and nails as we have given up hope on the administration doing something about it.Mayor Tony Chammany said that such practices would be dealt with seriously. The Corporation would take up the issue and every possible step to tackle the problem would be taken. The Corporation would stand with the nature lovers on the environmental issues, he said.
