Three more mass graves have been unearthed inside the BDR headquarters.

Dhaka: The barbarity of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) soldiers during their abortive uprising continued to unfold today as three more mass graves with mutilated bodies of army officers and their kin were uncovered at its headquarters here, raising the death toll to 77.

Among the 10 bodies retrieved this morning was that of slain BDR chief Maj Gen Shakil Ahmed's wife Nazneen, a fire brigade official said. There was no word on the fate of the couple's teenage son.

As anger spread across the country over the grisly killings, the Hasina government announced setting up of special tribunals for quick and "exemplary punishment" to the "culprits" involved in the massacre.

Three more mass graves were unearthed by army and fire brigade personnel aided by sniffer dogs, a day after bodies of 42 officers were recovered from a drain, including that of Maj Gen Ahmed, inside the BDR headquarters. Bodies of 25 others, including three civilians, were also found from the premises and nearby in the last three days.

In a nationally-televised statement shortly after midnight last night, Premier Sheikh Hasina's Principal Staff Officer Lt Gen Mohammad Abdul Mubin declared that the amnesty announced earlier would not cover soldiers involved in killings, rebellion, arson and other heinous crimes.
