Express News ServiceThe authorities are finally beginning to take notice of the hassles that the residents are put through due to open drains. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has begun desilting the city drains in full swing.Work on 6th cross, Benson Town the drain work began a while ago. Though the residents are happy with this move, they however question why the work has been approached in such a careless manner. Accompanying the work are a few hassles that has put the residents in a fix. Slabs that were removed in order to desilt the drains have not been replaced despite the time frame taken to complete the work. Residents here are troubled by the fact that they have to be extra careful while commuting on the road to avoid getting hurt by the stone slabs. Slabs have been left on the roads with no concern for the vehicles or the pedestrians.  The roads in the area are very narrow. To add to it, due to the locality's location these tiny roads receive see a heavy flow of traffic. A resident, Jyothi, said, “The desilting has been going on for the past one week. The roads here are very congested. We find it extremely difficult to remove vehicles from the apartment parking space due to the space constraints. The haphazard placement of the slabs has only added to the chaos. Pedestrians have no place for walking.” Residents further asserted that during the night their problems tend to multiply as it impossible for them to walk on these roads without getting hurt as there are no streetlights and the slabs are not visible at night.Desilting works in Cambridge Layout, on the other hand, has been carried out in an orderly fashion. Alternate slabs have been removed and placed on each other instead of being thrown carelessly on the roads. Though a little hard to jump from one slab to another, it is a manageable task when time calls for it. A resident, on the condition of anonymity, said, “It is heartening to see such progressive work being undertaken by the authorities. The work has been managed well and the thoughtful idea has worked to our favour.” Most residents say that the way by which work has been carried out here could act as an inspiration or as a model to work being carried out in all other areas of the city.Narasimha Raju, the executive engineer for Shanthinagar division, is also in charge of the development work that is in progress in  Cambridge Layout. He said, “It was done on a trial basis to see if it works well. Now that we know that the residents are satisfied by it, we will ensure that the same is continued from now on.” The executive engineer for Shivajinagar, said, “I will visit the spot and ensure that the problem is solved.”
