Drama over the resignation of Yanam MLA Malladi Krishna Rao continues after the Congress legislator faxed his resignation letter to the Speaker on Monday. The resignation was, however, not signed by the MLA in the proper format. It is, therefore, the prerogative of the Speaker to decide to accept or reject it, sources said. No action has been taken by Speaker V Sabapathy as Tuesday was a national holiday, sources added.
If accepted, the resignation letter will be sent for notification to the Government Gazette. The notification will then be sent to the Election Commission of India. Acceptance of the resignation would also catapult the ruling AINRC to a simple majority in the 30-member strong Assembly. Congress will be reduced to six seats while the AINRC will have 15 seats with AIADMK, DMK having five and two seats respectively. The ruling party would also not have to look for support from the lone independent MLA.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition V Vaithilingam blamed CM N Rangasamy for Rao’s resignation. He alleged that Congress constituencies were neglected by the government. He added that Rao was serious about his resignation and would not take it back. Rao’s resignation would not benefit the AINRC outside the House as it is unlikely to capture the seat in the bypoll. The MLA was not available for comment. Congress sources said he was expected in Puducherry Wednesday.
