New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday will give its verdict on the appeal filed by Pakistani scientist Mohammad Khaleel Chisti against a life sentence awarded to him by the Rajasthan High Court. The 80-year-old microbiologist has challenged the verdict in the Ajmer murder case, which took place over 20 year ago.
The apex court had earlier granted Chisti bail this April on humanitarian grounds and allowed him to go back to Pakistan for five months. Chisti came to India in 1990 to attend a relative's wedding. His son Tariq Chisti, who flew in from Jeddah, too was happy at his father's release. But there are conditions that have been imposed by the apex court for the interim arrangement.
After the apex court had granted Chisti permission to visit Pakistan, he reunited with his family after nearly two decades amidst moving and tearful scenes at the Karachi airport where hundreds of people were gathered to welcome him.
