CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Thursday ordered maintenance of status-quo in the matter of taking back of the office allotted to DMK MLA MK Stalin in his Kolathur constituency.Justice V Dhanapalan granted the injunction while passing an interim order on the writ petition from Stalin seeking to quash the proceedings dated December 15 of the Chennai Corporation Commissioner and a resolution adopted by the Council on December 22.Earlier, Advocate-General A Navaneethakrishnan submitted that since the allotment was not made in the individual name of Stalin and there was no order to this effect, there was no need to pass a separate GO to cancel the allotment made on First Circle Road, Jawahar Nagar in Kolathur. When the judge pointed out that under Sec 44(2) of Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act, an opportunity of hearing should be given, the AG claimed that an opportunity was given to Stalin. The matter will be taken up tomorrow (Dec 23).Stalin contended that the whole exercise was only to satisfy their political masters and not with respect to any other public reason. No educational activity was ever carried out in the building, as claimed by the Corporation. Major part of the building was meant only to stock freebies. Nothing would be improper in allocating a small portion of the building to run his office, which was allotted to him in July this year, Stalin added.
