Standstill as lake spills into KMC

CHENNAI: The arterial E V R Periyar Salai on Monday witnessed a major traffic pile up as water from the nearby Chetpet lake inundated the Kilpauk Medical Hospital and overflowed on the road. Following a quick assessment, the authorities launched maintenance work immediately to fix underground water pipes for arresting the overflow. To facilitate that, they declared the stretch between Ega Theatre junction and Gengu Reddy Subway one-way. “The work is conducted by the Highways Department and the Corporation. We expect that the diversion will be for a short time,” said Sanjay Arora, Additional Commissioner of Police, Greater Chennai Traffic Police. Following is the police advisory on the new traffic plan: Vehicles leading to Koyembedu from Parrys in the EVR Salai should turn left towards Gengu Reddy subway and reach Dr Gurusamy Bridge through Spurtank Road, Chetpet signal junction before taking left at the Ega theatre junction to proceed towards Koyembedu. Vehicles from Co-optex junction proceeding towards EVR Salai through Casa Major Road and Gengu Reddy subway should take right turn in Casa Major road towards Halls Road and move towards Udupi point and Nayar bridge to reach E V R Salai.Motorists leaving Santhosam Salai, T V Salai and Chitti Babu Salai located near Spurtank road cannot take left turn towards Spurtank Road; instead they should take Sathyamoorthy Salai to go to Egmore.Motorists from Valluvar Kottam Salai reaching Chetpet signal junction cannot take right turn towards Spurtank Road. They can instead take Dr Gurusamy Bridge and a right at the Ega theatre junction and reach Gengu Reddy subway to reach Spurtank Road. Motorists from Spurtank Road cannot proceed straight towards Harrington Road at the Chetpet signal junction. Instead they can take a left turn towards Sterling point and a U-turn to proceed to Harrington Road.Similarly, vehicles from Harrington Road cannot proceed straight towards Spurtank road. Instead, they can take a left turn at the Chetpet signal junction and take right turn at the Ega theatre junction and proceed towards Gengu Reddy subway to reach Spurtank Road. But vehicles can take right turn from Harrington road towards Valluvar Kottam Salai.Motorists proceeding towards E V R Salai from Dr Gurusamy Bridge can take left and right turns but those proceeding straight towards Vasu Street should go the Taylors road and take a U-turn to reach Vasu street. Vehicles at E V R Salai cannot take a right turn towards Dr Gurusamy Bridge to go to Chetpet, instead they should proceed straight on E V R Salai and take the Gengu Reddy subway and Spurtank Road to reach Chetpet.
