Stampede at New Delhi Railway Station, 2 dead
Stampede took place after last minute changes in the platform from where Bihar Sampark Kranti was to depart.

New Delhi: At least two people were killed and nine others injured in a stampede on Sunday afternoon at the New Delhi Railway Station. The dead include a woman and a child.

The stampede took place at platform numbers 12 and 13 at about 1450 hrs IST after last minute changes in the platform number from where the Bihar Sampark Kranti was to depart.

Passengers alleged that the platform of the train was changed without any announcement being made leading to chaos and stampede. The stampede happened at the staircase leading to the platforms.

"I left my luggage and my shoes. I fell amidst 10 people and felt as if I was about to die," said a Bihar-bound passenger.

"The platform numbers were interchanged for two trains but no announcements were made. That's what caused the stampede," said another passenger.

Delhi Police also said the stampede took place after last minute changes in the platform numbers of the trains. "Interchange of trains between platform number 12 and 13 caused this stampede. Senior officers are investigating the incident. The announcement of change in platform and passengers rushing to other platforms led to the incident. One women from Bhagalpur is among the victim," said Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat.

Bhagat added that the casualties were not high as first aid was given to the injured at the platform and them the injured were transferred to the hospitals

The injured were taken to the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan, Ram Manohar Lohia and Railway hospitals.

Railway announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of those who died. Those who are seriously injured will get Rs 50,000 while Rs 15,000 will be give to those with minor injuries.
