Srirangam gets set for Jaya visit

The rock city is gearing up for the visit of Chief Minister, J Jayalalithaa, who is scheduled to inaugurate a full time annadhanam scheme at Srirangam on September 13.

Although, the annadhanam scheme is in vogue in over 450 temples in the State, the Sri Ranganathaswamy temple at Srirangam and the Sri Dhandayudhapani temple at Palani, would be the first to start the 14-hour annadhandam scheme by which people who visit the temples would be given free food throughout the day from 8 am to 10 pm.

The Chief Minister would also inaugurate completed schemes, lay foundation stones for new schemes and distribute welfare assistance to the poor during her visit.

The Chief Minister would lay the foundation stones for an indoor stadium at Srirangam, a Zonal office of the Government transport office and the under-ground drainage scheme for Srirangam and Thiruvanaikoil.

The function will be held at the junction of West Chithira street and South Chithira street. She will also distribute welfare assistance for the poor.

In another function at the Sri Ranganatha Swamy temple later, she would inaugurate the full time annadhanam scheme. The annadhanam scheme was inaugurated by the AIADMK government in 2002 at the Kapaleeswarar temple in Mylapore. The scheme was implemented in 360 temples and later extended to another 108 temples when the AIADMK was elected to power in 2011.
