GUNTUR: What drove Adava Venkayamma, who allegedly made an attempt to crucify herself three days ago with the help of her husband and two others in Guntur district? Is it superstition or passion? What was the role of her husband and the villagers of KothuruTadepalli?
According to sources, Doraiah, the village pastor, was very close to Venkayamma and her husband Francis. He died three years ago. It is said that recently Venkayamma was told by the spirit of the deceased to crucify herself. The spirit also suggested the place for crucifixion. When the day came, villagers waited for the appointed hour with Bibles and flowers in their hands to pray and pay tributes to Venkayamma since she is going to achieve supernatural powers after crucifixion.
Around 11 am on Friday, Venkayamma was brought to the place referred to by the spirit of the pastor. Her husband Franics and children and relatives B Ramesh and Chandrasekhar were present.Venkayamma and Fransis are daily wage labourers. They have a son and a daughter who are in 3rd and 2nd classes respectively. "There were no problems in the family. We do not know what made them to do this," said R Yesamma, a neighbour of Venkayamma. "I was called by pastor Doraiah to come there. He has been asking me to come to the God's place," Venkyamma told the doctors who treated her. She gave up food and water for quite some time and started praying to Jesus Christ round the clock. Now she is undergoing treatment at the mental patients ward of the government general hodpital at Guntur.
