HYDERABAD: With the five-year term of gram panchayats expiring on Monday, the state government has decided to appoint special officers to replace the elected bodies. Though there was a demand from the AP Sarpanches Association to appoint the outgoing sarpanches as person in-charges, the Kiran Kumar Reddy government has decided to appoint special officers to avoid possible legal complications.Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, it is learnt, has cleared the file proposing appointment of special officers to rule the gram panchayats as per the AP Panchayat Raj Act. A formal notification appointing the special officers will be issued on Tuesday and the same has been communicated to the district collectors.In all, there are about 21,801 gram panchayats in the state. Mandal-level officers like mandal revenue officers, mandal education officers and mandal parishad development officers will be appointed to the posts on additional charge for a period of six months. Following the latest decision, all the local bodies will now function under the special officers. It may be recalled that the government has already appointed special officers for 125 municial bodies followed by special officers to 22 zilla parishads and 1,098 mandal parishads for a period of six months in place of their elected bodies whose five-year term came to an end last month.
