CHENNAI: The Project Day at Vidhyasagar is a learning experience not just for challenged children, but also for their parents and teachers. And it was no different this year too.At the beginning of every academic year, a topic would be chosen by the staff and students of the institution and this year, it is ‘Natural Calamities’.Over the year, the children will be exposed to the various sub-topics under the Natural Calamities, through activities, field trips and talks by experts. As part of their study, the students with the help of the parents and teachers have created models that displays their understanding and perception about the various facets of the chosen topic and they were displayed recently.Children belonging to reception class I, II and III had artfully done models of various calamities like earthquakes, tsunami, volcanic eruptions, flooding and forest fire. Sankarshan (8) and his mother Rani Balakrishnan had displayed a beautiful model of volcano in different stages — dormant, smoking and the lava overflowing. The forest fire model with birds and animals trying to escape was another realistic display.Children between the age of 12-16 had models which showed the impact of natural disasters on transportation systems like roadway, water ways and airways.Harish had models of rescue equipments and one model that was quite realistic was helicopters hanging from the ceiling and a rope ladders swinging in and food parcels being dropped — all made out of cardboard. On display were communication equipments too, which are used in rescue and relief, and it included the yesteryear equipments like drums, fire signals as well as the modern day satellite communication systems.Prassana, a special educator said at Vidhyasagar, said, “This Project Day help students to get exposed more to concepts on a deeper level, besides allowing them learn better socialisation skills when they trying talking to others.”
