Days after receiving backlash over his ‘stray incident’ comment, former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly is set to join thousands of protestors and hit the streets of Kolkata on Wednesday to protest against the trainee doctor’s rape and murder. In addition to this, Ganguly will also participate in his wife’s dance school protest later in the evening.
On Monday evening, the former Indian cricket team skipper changed the profile picture on his social media handles to “black” and joined hands with thousands of users who changed their social media display image to express their solidarity with the trainee doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, who was raped and murdered. However, Ganguly is faced severe backlash for this.
Netizens criticised the former BCCI President for changing his profile picture to black, calling it a superficial response and demanded an apology from him for his earlier statement.
Why Was Sourav Ganguly Cristicised?
Ganguly, earlier, while commenting on the horrific rape and murder incident in Kolkata defended the Mamata Banerjee government and said that “everything should not be judged based on a stray incident“.
“I don’t think everything should be judged on a stary incident. There is no room to think that everything or everyone is not safe in the state. Such accidents happen all over the world. It is wrong to think that girls are not safe. Not only in West Bengal, but everywhere in India, women are safe. Where we live is the best place. One should not judge by one incident.”
However, he later clarified his statement and said, “I don’t know how what I said last Sunday was construed or interpreted. I have said it earlier as well that (the crime) it’s a terrible thing. Now the CBI (and the) police are investigating the matter. It’s very shameful what has happened.”
“I hope that the CBI will soon find the culprit. The culprit should be given such a strict punishment that no one dares to commit such crime again in their life. That is important. Punishment has to be severe,” the former cricketer added.
