BANGALORE: Next time when your phone beeps, do not be surprised to see your mobile alert in Kannada.
The Kannada Development Authority (KDA) has recommended the state government to insist that mobile companies use Kannada for mobile phone alerts. KDA has recommended that mobile phone alerts like phone bill and payment, cricket live updates, traffic updates or even the messages that are sent as part of advertisement be sent in Kannada.
KDA Chairman Mukyamantri Chandru who has submitted the recommendations to Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, said they were not against English or any other language. "We want it to be in Kannada as well. Messages in bilingual will create no problem to Kannadigas and nonKannadigas," he said.Head of Corporate Communications, Bharti Airtel Limited, Karnataka, Sharath Tejaswi, said Airtel already had a Kannada portal from where users could download ring tones, caller tunes and other services. President and Chief Operating Officer (COO), Kavveri Telecom Products Limited, Uma Reddy, said it was possible to develop such a software where the service provider could send mobile alerts in Kannada. She said it was a brilliant idea to have mobile phone alerts in a regional language. She believes that this will be especially helpful to people from rural part of the state.
