New Delhi/Hyderabad: Actor-turned-politician K. Chiranjeevi on Wednesday said Congress president Sonia Gandhi had promised suitable posts and responsibilities for him and other leaders of the erstwwhile Praja Rajyam Party (PRP). Chiranjeevi called on Sonia Gandhi in the national capital. It was his first meeting after he merged the PRP with the Congress party.
After the 20-minute long meeting with Congress president, Chiranjeevi said she assured suitable posts for him and other PRP leaders. He, however, said he did not demand any particular post for himself or the others. Sonia Gandhi told him that the discussion was on with regard to the responsibility to be given to him in the party.
Chiranjeevi said he discussed with her the political situation in Andhra Pradesh but the issue of cabinet expansion did not come up during the meeting. According to Chiranjeevi, the Congress president said the merger had strengthened the Congress party in Andhra Pradesh.
PRP, which has 18 members in 294-member assembly, had merged with Congress party in August, providing the ruling party much needed strength in the face of revolt by legislators loyal to YSR Congress party chief Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy. As many as 26 legislators loyal to Jaganmohan Reddy have already submitted their resignations.
Chiranjeevi's meeting with Sonia Gandhi took place at a time when Andhra Pradesh assembly speaker N. Manohar is individually meeting the legislators before taking a decision on their resignations.
Chiranjeevi is waiting for the expansion of the state cabinet. He hopes to get some key posts for his group. The superstar himself is ready to accept a cabinet berth.
