THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Residents’ associations in Kazhakkootam are launching agitations demanding a lasting solution to the traffic congestion in and around the IT hub.  On Monday, the Federation of Residents’ Associations Kazhakkoottam (FRAK) will stage a dharna in the locality demanding that the State Government should promptly redress their grievance. Former Minister N K Premachandran will inaugurate the dharna, FRAK officials told a press conference here the other day.   Their demands include widening the Kazhakkoottam-Pallipuram National Highway stretch into a four-lane road. FRAK officials complained that the National Highway Authority of India was scarcely heeding to the pleas for developing the NH stretches passing through the region.   FRAK’s demands come in the wake of PWD Minister V K Ebrahim Kunju announcing that steps were being taken to solve traffic congestion on roads in and around Kazhakkoottam. A meeting convened by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on October 3 had decided to develop the Pallippuram-Kazhakkoottam stretch as a four-lane road. The stretch would have medians to ensure smooth traffic flow.   Although NHAI is responsible for the development of the Kazhakkoottam-Kulathur Road, it was decided at the October 3 meeting that the State Government would do the work. The PWD (NH) chief engineer has been entrusted with the job of conducting the preliminary works.
