THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the objective of tapping young shooting talents, Shooting Sports Foundation of India (SSFI), a national trust formed by  Sunny Thomas and a couple of Kerala-based shooters, will organise a special shooting coaching summit and four- day competition at Travancore Convention Centre in Technopark on Wednesday. The event is being launched as the  maiden venture of the SSFI towards spotting budding talents and imparting training to them to help them make it to the international shooting  circuits. This is the first of the three or four coaching cum selection events planned in the state.  It would be  be a coaching-competition-evaluation model, where experts would first train the youth. After imparting basic knowledge, they will conduct a competition among the participants. The trainers will assess the competitors and handpick the talented ones.  ‘’The project is designed for a period of eight years and the selected candidates would be given advanced training in shooting. After the preliminary stage, almost 60 youngsters would be handpicked for a year’s training. The trust will arrange free sponsorships for the selected candidates. At the later stage, the number of recruits would be brought down to 20. This is a major step to groom potential talents in the state,’’ said secretary general Roshin Mathew. The spotlight of the event would be on Suma Shirur, Olympian and world record holder in  women’s 10 am air rifle event. She will deliver elementary tips on shooting techniques, mind control and psychological preparation to the participants.  The shooting competition will be held  from May 31 to June 3.
