The Uttar Pradesh Government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has released a ‘shoot on sight’ order to kill the man-eating wolves that have unleashed terror in Bahraich.
The firing order came after the authorities in Bahraich intensified their efforts under ‘Operation Bhediya’ to capture two man-eater wolves responsible for eight deaths and multiple injuries since July 17.
In their latest attack on Monday night, the wolves injured a child. According to news agency ANI, a five-year-old girl was attacked late on Monday while she was sleeping next to her grandmother at her home.
She was swiftly rescued and was admitted to a hospital, where she is undergoing treatment.
Speaking to ANI, the girl’s grandmother said the wolf attacked the girl while they were asleep, adding, they did not have a door in their house.
One of the neighbours of the family said they were alarmed by a commotion in the vicinity and later learnt about the wolf attack on the child.
The neighbour also confirmed a team from the forest department arrived at the site. However, the wolf had been chased away by locals by then. The animal disappeared into the dark, he added.
Earlier on Monday, 45-year-old Suman Devi was found injured in a suspected wolf attack and was hospitalised.
So far, a total of eight deaths, since July 17, have been reported in Bahraich due to wolf attacks, while reports of suspected animal attacks were also received from the neighbouring Sitapur district.
Seven children were among those killed, and about 30 were injured, news agency PTI reported.
OPERATION BHEDIYA
Last month, the Uttar Pradesh government launched ‘Operation Bhediya’ to capture a pack of wolves on the prowl in Mehsi tehsil in Bahraich district that killed eight people.
Drone cameras and thermal drone mapping techniques were being used by the Forest Department to catch the wolves. Permission to tranquilise the animals had been granted by the Chief Wildlife Warden, according to an official statement.
