THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Whether Anna Hazare’s methods are truly Gandhian might be hot topic for debate these days, but the real Gandhiji is finding himself nudged out of text books, lament organisations dedicated to the propagation of his vision. Hurt by the phenomenon, the Kerala Gandhi Smarak Nidhi has announced a committee to study how the Father of the Nation has over the years faded away from school and college curricula. The committee will also suggest remedial measures. The government will be more amenable to reinstate Mahatma Gandhi if there is a strong study report on the issue, Gandhi Smarak Nidhi officials hope. The committee headed by Indian Council of Gandhian Studies, New Delhi, chairman Prof N Radhakrishnan will submit the report within two months to the Chief Minister, Education Minister, the Director of Public Instruction(DPI) and the vice chancellors of universities. The syllabi from Class I to the first year of the degree course will be analysed by the 11-member committee, said N Nanukuttan Nair, joint secretary of the Gandhi Smarak Nidhi. “The degree of reduction in content has been substantial over the past 15 years. But only a proper study can help us urge the government to restore the lost Gandhian chapters,” he said. Prof N Radhakrishnan says Gandhiji’s disappearance from text books has been especially notable in Kerala compared to other states. “At the national level, there has been a gradual reduction, but in Kerala it is more pronounced. One reason might be that the academia in Kerala for many years have been Marxist-controlled,” he said. The content on Gandhiji has dwindled to such alarming proportions in Kerala that it has prompted a demand from various quarters for a careful study on it, he said.”
