For the local body elections, the State Election Commission has notified the reservation of seats in municipalities, commune panchatyats and village panchayats for scheduled caste women (SCW), general women (GW) and scheduled caste.
According to a statement from State Election Commissioner Uddipta Ray, as per the rule in vogue, 16 percent of the seats have been reserved for SCs. As per the existing order of the government, 583 seats are to reserved at various levels, out of which 159 seats are for SC, 98 for SCW and 326 seats for GW candidates.
During 2006 civic election habitations with highest SC population were notified as reserved areas, but in the ensuing elections the areas with the next higher SC population have been reserved for SC candidates. ENS
