HYDERABAD: Agitations and rasta rokos were staged by YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) activists and journalists working for Jagan Mohan Reddy's media companies across the state on Wednesday, protesting against the freeze of the bank accounts belonging to the media group.Mild violence was witnessed at a few places but police took the situation into control and arrested some activists.The CBI froze the bank accounts of the Jagan media companies on Tuesday in connection with alleged illegalities in their funding.YSRCP activists staged protests and rasta rokos in support of their party president Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.Journalists organised protests demanding that the CBI defreeze the bank accounts as a large number of employees including journalists are dependent on salaries.Effigies of the CBI were burnt in Nalgonda, Guntur, Anantapur, Kadapa and several other districts.Rasta rokos and protests were organised by journalists and YSRCP activists at several places in Hyderabad, Kadapa, Guntur, Chittoor, Prakasam, Anantapur and elsewhere in the state.Journalists staged a dharna in front of the Visakhapatnam airport when chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy arrived from Hyderabad to participate in a Congress meeting at Gokulapadu village in S Rayavaram mandal in the district.Later, they submitted a memorandum to him for defreezing the accounts as the livelihood of journalists was at stake.Protests were also organised in Srikakulum and Vizianagaram districts.YSRCP workers organised a dharna in front of the CBI office in the city.Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) gave a call for rallies across the state on Thursday to support about 2,000 staff including journalists working in Sakshi TV channel and newspaper.A rally will be organised from the APUWJ office in Basheerbagh to the Ambedkar statue at Tank Bund at 10 am Thursday.It was decided to send a delegation to meet governor ESL Narasimhan and request him to intervene.K Srinivas Reddy, former secretary of the Indian Journalists Union (IJU), said more than 2,000 people are affected due to the CBI's decision to freeze the bank accounts of the Sakshi media houses.He pointed out that the court has not issued any such order yet and thus, the CBI's action would be considered as an act against freedom of the press.
