KARWAR: Marine scientists, including those from CMFRI, have favoured the establishment of an independent system to monitor parameters of the marine ecosystem here, including the pH level and temperatures for its protection from degradation due to any pollution. There are industrial establishments like Solaris Chemtech Limited running a chemical factory and Kaiga Project producing nuclear power, which have their own mechanism to monitor the discharge from their units. But if an independent monitoring system exists, the apprehension of the public about possible pollution by such units could be removed. Other establishments like commercial ports, which do not have their own environment monitoring system, can also avail the assistance of the independent monitoring system. Moreover, such a system can suggest measures to improve the mechanism within the units, the scientists feel. Such an agency should have better expertise and sophisticated instruments. There are organisations such as National Institute of Oceanography, which can render their services to the industrial units which discharge effluents to the sea. CMFRI has been giving its service in monitoring environmental parameters to Mangalore Refineries. It can supplement their efforts to improve their own system and ensure the safety of the marine ecosystem, it is said.
