BERHAMPUR: Sarpanch of Hatimunda under Kandhamal district Pradeep Mallick was arrested on Saturday on charges of alleged links with the Maoists.A four-page letter written by rebel leader Sabyasachi Panda to Dandapani Mohanty, one of the three mediators who negotiated with the Maoists during the abduction of the then Malkangiri collector, was seized from Mallick’s possession. Though police did not divulge details of the letter, it is learnt that Panda in the letter asked Mohanty to bail out the arrested Maoist supporters lodged in Berhampur circle jail, file a case against police for fake encounters and collect funds for Maoist activists including a proposed rally in September. A senior police official, on condition of anonymity, said during interrogation, Mallick revealed that after allegation of sexual assault on women cadres, Panda has been sidelined by the central committee of the CPI (Maoist) outfit. “In his place, two senior cadres Manoj and Chaitanya are looking after activities of the outfit in Orissa,” the official added. He further informed that the two are Hindi-speaking persons frequenting Berhampur to collect donations and other information.Mallick has been produced before a court which remanded him in judicial custody. He is, however, likely to be produced before JMFC court at Daringibadi.
