CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday announced that the Government Dental College here would be upgraded as a Centre of Excellence in Dentistry and allocated `10 crore for the purpose.“The funds would be utilised to upgrade the hospital by constructing additional buildings and creating new posts to make it as a Centre of Excellence in Dentistry,” the CM said, making a suo motu statement.The CM recalled that during the previous AIADMK regime, land was allocated for expanding the hospital. On March 3, she had inaugurated the multi-storey building built at a cost of `14 crore. Stating that her government has been taking many measures for ensuring healthcare to the rural population on par with those in urban areas, she said the PHCs in villages have been upgraded to handle emergency cases and surgeries. Dental care units have been functioning in all government colleges-cum-hospitals, all district hospitals, 150 taluk hospitals and 15 other hospitals, the CM said.
