RAMANATHAPURAM: An amount of Rs 3,000 crore has been earmarked for the disbursement of crop loans to farmers across the State, cooperatives minister Sellur Raju announced here on Wednesday.Quality seeds worth Rs 600 crore have also been made ready for supply to the farmers, he added.The ministers informed that some encroachments were identified during their visit to some areas, which prevented the free flow of rainwater. Action would be taken to remove the encroachments without delay, they said. Steps would be taken to repair several roads and 19 houses in the rural pockets that were damaged due to the rains.Sellur and Minister for Information Technology R B Udhayakumar who were inspecting waterlogged areas in the district on Wednesday had to wade through knee-deep water.Around 100 people from the low-lying Om Sakthi Nagar near Mandapam, that was inundated have been shifted to a cyclone shelter put up at Mandapam.“When it rains, we are in trouble. Reptiles enter our houses,” said Murugan of Om Sakthi Nagar, one of the spots Raju and Udhayakumar inspected. The two ministers tucked up their dhotis and battled surging flood waters to reach the place.Later, they inspected J J Nagar, Notchi Oorani near Pirapan Valasai, Sathya Nagar near Uchapuli, Nehru Nagar and Khan Sahib Street in Ramanathapuram. District Collector Arun Roy and others accompanied.The ministers told reporters in Mandapam that they would submit a report on the flood situation in the areas of their visit to the CM.
