The district administration is gearing up to upgrade the Yadagiri Betta (Yadgir hillock), the abode of picturesque lakes, historic monuments and temples, into a place of tourist interest.
Deputy Commissioner Gurneet Tej Menon had mooted the idea of developing the Betta sometime ago.
According to the records available, Chalukyas of Kalyana developed the hillock, which is now in a dilapidated condition as their second capital in 11th and 12th centuries.
The remains of the palace, cannons, temples and the lakes on the hillock speak in volumes about the glory of this place even today.
Akkatangiyara Bavi (a well which never dries up), five cannons, the store house of explosives and the temples of Ramalingeshwara, Hanuman and Bhavani are on the top of the hillock.
Besides, it h a s i n s c r i p t i o n s i n Kannada. According to official sources, the Tourism Department has released Rs 2 crore for the development of the hillock. They visited the hillock and prepared a blueprint for the work recently.
Steps are also being taken to provide basic facilities such as drinking water and cottages here.
