Rewards pour in for bronze medal winner Sushil
PM Manmohan Singh was among the first to congratulate Sushil Kumar.

New Delhi: Railwayman Sushil Kumar's bronze medal winning effort at the Beijing OIympics has seen sate governments and ministries falling over each other to announce rewards for the wrestler.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee were among the first dignitaries to congratulate the 25-year-old Sushil on winning the bronze medal in the 66kg freestyle wrestling event at the China Agricultural University in Beijing.

Railway Minister Lalu Prasad announced Rs 55 lakh cash reward and also said that the wrestler will be promoted as Assistant Commercial Manager. Sushil was earlier Chief Ticket Inspector.

The Haryana government also announced a cash reward of Rs. 25 lakh while Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit announced a reward of Rs 50 lakh.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said the wrestler has done the country proud by his stupendous feat. He also announced a cash reward of Rs. 25 lakh to woman shuttler Sania Nehwal who had reached the quarter-finals of the singles event in Beijing Olympics.

Union Sports Ministry also announced a cash reward of Rs 20 lakh and Sports Minister MS Gill congratulated the wrestler on his medal-winning effort.

"I congratulate Sushil on his great win. His medal will encourage all wrestlers in the country and we will give them full support," Gill said.

Steel Minister Ram Vilas Paswan also announced Rs 25 lakh for Sushil who was being sponsored by Steel Authority of India for the Beijing Olympics.

Even private companies joined in rewarding Sushil, with RK Global Shares and Securities Limited announcing Rs 5 lakh for the Delhi wrestler.

RK Global Managing Director Ramesh Kumar Bhagchandka said is company would give Rs 5 lakh to Sushil.
