Many new generation motion pictures struggle to portray real-life situations as they lack originality, opined Speaker G Karthikeyan.
Inaugurating the Bharathan commemoration programme organised by the Artist P J Cheriyan Foundation at Changampuzha Park, Edappally, on Sunday, Karthikeyan illustrated the late film director Bharathan’s dedication to good cinema.
Bharathan’s films were classics. Film lovers remember him as one of the top artists of all time,” he said.
Bharathan’s movies typically arouse mixed emotions in a person’s mind, especially a film like ‘Yavanika’. His directorial skills were matchless. “Bharathan’s films still haunts viewers which proves his unique film-making,” said Karthikeyan.
Bharathan, who was also an artist, has inspired many with his artistic vision. “His cinematic frames are reminiscent of sculptures,” said Karthikeyan, calling upon young film-makers to imbibe the values that Bharathan propagated. Karthikeyan recalled that Bharathan had visualised the man-woman relationship in a poetic and picturesque manner, stating that his films were famous for their realistic take on rural life. Karthikeyan also praised the genius of Bharathan and Padmarajan who had worked together to produce some of the most memorable films.
“This had paved the way for one of the most flourishing eras in the history of cinema,” he said. Nedumudi Venu remembered Bharathan to be a fan of Hindola ragam. “This day haunts me as it is the death anniversary of M G Radhakrishnan and Rajan P Dev,” said Venu.
He met Bharatan for the first time as a journalist in an interview for a magazine. “Our friendship blossomed, and soon he asked me to act in his film Aravam,” said Venu. Renowned directors K G George and Mohan were honoured on the occasion. Jose Thettayil MLA, script-writer John Paul, V K Prakash, Rajiv Nair, T M Abraham, Roby Kannanchira and Jayaraj Warrier was also present.
As part of the ceremony, a caricature art was displayed by Jayaraj Warrier in memory of Bharathan.
