New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday watched the annual Republic Day parade here on television from his hospital bed as doctors said he showed further improvement following a heart surgery two days ago.

"The prime minister is showing further improvement in his health. In the morning he watched the Republic Day function on television," DK Gupta, medical superintendent of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said.

This is the first time a prime minister has skipped the January 26 Republic Day celebrations. Defence Minister AK Antony stood in for Manmohan Singh during the ceremonies.

Manmohan Singh, 76, underwent a 11-hour bypass heart surgery at the AIIMS. He is expected to be in the hospital for about a week.
