BHUBANESWAR: The students of Odisha have improved their performance in the Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examinations (IIT-JEE) this year with a whopping 241 candidates getting into the merit list, as compared to 88 last year.Rakesh Ranjan Nayak, a student from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Phulbani, ranked 154th, was the top ranker from the State. “I prepared for one full year for the IIT-JEE after my 12th Class. I intensified my preparations two months before the entrance examination. Even though IIT, Delhi is ranked high amongst all the IITs, I will be applying for IIT, Mumbai mainly because I like the place,” said Rakesh, a student of Akash Institute.“We are very happy about the performance of our students and are sure there will be many more achievers in the years to come,” said Akash Institute Director Ajay Bahadur Singh.Around 27 students from Akash Institute have got into the merit list. Last year, the top ranker from the State was placed at 331st position. “The performance of the students of the State this year has been extremely well as compared to last year. There has been a huge jump in the number of students getting into the merit list of the IIT-JEE,” said J B Padhee, chairman of Padhee Tutorials, from where 14 students got into the merit list. Around 5,000 students had appeared for the IIT-JEE this year from the State. One lakh students appeared for the Odisha JEE examination. The coaching centre faculties claim that it is the fear of IIT-JEE entrance that hinders students from appearing for the all-India test. A student needs to score a minimum of 60 per cent in +2 science examination to appear for IIT-JEE.“There is a fear psychosis amongst the students that they will not be able to crack the entrance. They need to overcome this fear. We can then have many more students cracking the most difficult examination of the country,” explained Padhee.FIITJEE, Bhubaneswar centre, also saw 54 students getting into the merit list with Rishav Pati securing 262nd rank.
