Chennai: Rajiv Gandhi assassin Nalini Sriharan has been shifted out of the Vellore Prison after she complained about harassment by the jail authorities. Nalini, who has spent 19 years in Vellore Prison, will now be lodged in Chennai's Puzhal Central Prison.
She had written to the prison in-charge alleging that "prison manual rules regarding rights of prisoners are being violated by jail authorities in the Vellore Central Prison while dealing with her". Her lawyer P Pugalenthi alleged that Nalini was being prevented from communicating with the outside world.
She had earlier given a three-page complaint and had decided to move the Madras High court, seeking a direction to transfer her from Vellore Prison to Puzhal Central Prison.
However, on June 26 Pugalenthi said that Nalini had decided to drop her demand, saying conditions had improved in Vellore jail.
"She said that she will no more seek transfer to another prison as things have improved after Deputy Inspector General of Police Govindarajan conducted an inquiry in the prison," said Pugalenthi after meeting her on Saturday.
Her petition for premature release was rejected by Madras High Court in May 2010.
