KOCHI: The Southern Railways has submitted before the permanent Lok Adalath that a plan for eco-friendly toilets in trains could be implemented only with the approval of the Railway Board. Divisional Chief Superintendent Dr V N Mathoor submitted that the project would put additional financial burden on the Railways. In the counter-affidavit, the Railways stated that the Research Design and Standard Organisation (RDSO) had been entrusted with the task of conducting a feasibility study on the project. The petition filed by the Human Rights Defence Forum to ban dumping of human waste in the open was submitted before D Papachan and John Dari, the chairpersons of the Lok Adalath. Counsel for the petitioner stated before the court that the current toilet system in the train is polluting the environment but the Railways denied the allegation. The Railways said that its cleaning system was efficient and that practice did not cause pollution. The use of toilets in the trains is strictly prohibited at stations. The Lok Adalath will again consider the petition after the Pollution Control Board submits its report before it on August 16.
