GADAG:  The first attempt by the state government to convince the agitating farmers to withdraw their movement against the proposed Posco steel plant at Halligudi met with failure, after talks between District In-charge Minister C C Patil and Siddhalinga swamiji of Tontadarya mutt fell through.
The seer told Patil that there was no question of withdrawing the agitation, despite a fervent appeal from the latter, who assured that the state government would withdraw land acquisition in the village. "Let the government do whatever it deems right, but this agitation will not be withdrawn until all appropriate steps are taken," he said when the minister and his party colleagues met the seer at Tontadarya mutt at a meeting that lasted for about 20 minutes. The seer told, in explicit terms, that "the land which is being acquired by the government was fertile and is the only source of income for the farmers". He posed the rejoinder that with the proposed area about to get water for irrigation from the Singatalur lift irrigation project, why must farmers give up their land? "The project will affect Kappata Hill which is abundant with mineral resources," he asserted.

The minister replied that he does not possess technical knowledge about the soil and the government will take care of it. He added that the highlevel committee, comprising officials of environment, industry and other departments, will visit the hill to find out the precautions to be taken. The seer didn't budge to any plea from the minister and vehemently backed the agitation.
