MADURAI: Foreign tourists and many from other parts of the country had a taste of the traditional Pongal festival at Tirumalpuram hamlet in Chettikulam panchayat near here on Monday. The Pongal Tourist Festival-2012, jointly organised by the the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department and the Samathuva Ilaignar Narpani Mandram, attracted around 200 foreign tourists and a fair number of domestic tourists to the hamlet. The tourists who were taken to Tirumalpuram in a chartered bus and private vehicles were accorded a ceremonial welcome at the village entrance. They were offered Parivattam, Thilakam and garlands. Women tourists were offered glass bangles. The tourists were taken in a row of bullock carts. Tourists from Australia, the United States, England, New Zealand, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Israel, Austria, Canada, Belgium and Holland participated in the festival.
